A little bit of history...

Originally used as the American Book Center warehouse, Voetboogstraat 11 has been an important location for us for many years. In 1998, as ABC's exhibition and event agenda began to grow larger than our store could hold, Voetboogstraat 11 seemed a natural home for this growing part of the ABC company culture.

This new venture was named the ABC Treehouse, in honor of that special and magical place that we all remember from our childhood. A treehouse was a place you built together with others, from where you could look out and see your world and the state it was in. Together with your pals you could plan to change the world... or to forget about it for a while. It was a safe haven and a launch pad. It was a place where you could express yourself.

A primary mission of the ABC Treehouse was to strengthen the bonds of community between the international and Dutch citizens who live and work in the Netherlands. With our sister venue, the ABC Treehut, in Den Haag, the ABC Treehouse presented projects which nurtured dialogue and cooperation within this community for over ten years.

Today, the ABC Treehouse continues to serve this mission of Community Building while growing into an independently operated cultural center. Maintaining strong ties to, and critical support from, the American Book Center, the Treehouse continues to offer a rich selection of art, music, workshops... and fun & funky cultural events like launch parties for the hottest new books and our annual Thanksgiving dinner.

Easily accessible in the heart of Amsterdam, The ABC Treehouse is a special place - just across the square from the Amsterdam location of the American Book Center.

Who are we?

The ABC Treehouse is primarily supported by the volunteers, teachers, and community members who use its various rooms to realize their projects.... and by American Book Center, booksellers with a personal touch.
